Did Apple do a Black Friday sale this year?

Last year, we expected Apple to sell its products at a reduced price on Black Friday 2014 as it had in the past. However, Apple decided that it didn’t need to offer any incentives to get people to shop on the 28 November 2014 so the UK missed out on savings direct from the company.

Apple’s head of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts has already spoken briefly about Black Friday, suggesting that the company won’t be joining in with the annual tradition again in 2015 because “being good to your employees will always be good for business.”

In 2011, 2012 and 2013 in the UK on Black Friday, Apple offered savings of up to £80 on Macs, £50 on iPads and £25 on iPods, so it did come as a surprise that it didn’t offer any sort of Black Friday incentive for UK customers last year.

Apple did offer a Black Friday event for its US customers on 28 November 2014.  Apple ditched discounts in favour of reduced gift cards or the offer of a free gift card (worth up to $75) when you purchase an Apple product.

Black Friday 2015 UK: What is Black Friday & when is it?

In the US, the day after Thanksgiving is referred to as Black Friday, and it is the biggest day for shopping as extravagant discounts are applied to thousands of products across various retailers. This year, Black Friday falls on 27 November.

It’s named Black Friday because it’s the day when stores go from the red (debit) into the black (credit). While Thanksgiving and therefore Black Friday are primarily a US-based holiday, thanks to the internet and online shopping, UK companies have joined in the fun in a bid to make more sales.

What is Cyber Monday?

A new trend that has appeared in recent years is Cyber Monday, which is the first Monday in December (it’ll actually be 30 November this year!) and is also the Monday after Black Friday. It’s believed to be the busiest day of the year for online shopping, presumably because everyone’s recently been paid and realises that they’ve only got a few weeks left to do their Christmas shopping.

Some retailers launch new promotions on Cyber Monday, so we’ll bring you those deals here. Cyber Monday and Black Friday mark the beginning of the Christmas shopping period here in the UK.

Last year, Cyber Monday fell on 1 December, which was also World AIDS Day, so if you purchased an Apple product that day Apple made a donation to the cause. Apple said that for every product sold: “We’ll contribute a portion of the proceeds from every product, accessory and gift card we sell to the Global Fund to fight AIDS.”
