Mental illness knows no age, race, income, sex, or education level. Celebs may live in the glitzy world of glamour. But their lives are far from perfect. While some have lost the battle, others have had better luck, and have chosen to raise awareness about mental health issues.
Deepika Padukone launched her NGO Live Love Laugh, in October last year, to raise the importance of spreading awareness about mental health at the launch of her NGO. “We need to de-stigmatize mental illness and spread awareness about mental health. I know in the current scenario we lead stressful lives, but you have to keep reminding yourself that it is important to live, love and laugh. After all, that is what life is all about. Most importantly, for people like me who have had an experience with anxiety and depression, I think it is important to know that there is hope,” she has been quoted as saying
Jiah Khan couldn’t fight her depression and finally succumbed to it. She committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her room. The actor suffered depression, rumoured to be because of her failed Bollywood career and relationship troubles.
The late actor Parveen Babi allegedly suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was severely depressed. She eventually committed suicide on 22nd January 2005.
Models Viveka Babajee and Nafisa Joseph, both committed suicides after finding out they couldn’t tie knot with their boyfriends. Nafisa, a model-turned-veejay, committed suicide on July 29, 2004, at her Versova apartment, after finding out that her boyfriend was already married. Viveka had a fight with her boyfriend who had commitment issues. Both lived alone in Mumbai and rumour has it, were fighting depression.
Model and actor Brooke Shields suffered from a severe case of postpartum depression in 2003. She spoke about her condition in an effort to help other mums to deal with the horrors of postnatal depression. She admitted that she had not been aware of her illness after giving birth to her first child, revealing that she was unable to hold, or even look at her baby. Brooke also said that she had cried for weeks and believed she made the worst mistake of her life. “I had gone through numerous attempts to have a baby and when I did finally have this perfect, beautiful, healthy baby and it all but destroyed me. I couldn’t hold the baby, I couldn’t do anything for the baby, I couldn’t look at the baby,” she said.
