Minimum Hardware Requirements For Windows 10

Windows 10 PC Shipments

Microsoft has long maintained that the PC version of Windows 10 will come with the exact same system requirements as Windows 7 and 8.1, but the company has now provided more details.

These follow the hardware requirements for Windows 10 for Phones that were revealed earlier today.

A presentation slide by Microsoft at the WinHec event, the company has confirmed that Windows 10 requires a screen resolution of at least 800 x 600 — along with a display size of at least 7-inches for the Pro version and 8-inches for consumer variants of the operating system.

Additionally, 32-bit versions of Windows 10 require a bare minimum of 1GB of RAM and 16GB space, while 64-bit installations will demand 2GB and 20GB respectively.

These requirements are for new PCs only.

  • Firmware. UEFI 2.3.1 with Secure Boot enabled
  • TPM. Optional, can be TPM 1.2 or 2.0. TPM 2.0 is required one year after Windows 10 RTMs.
  • RAM. 1 GB (32-bit/x86) or 2GB (64-bit/x64)
  • Storage. 16 GB (32-bit/x86) or 20 GB (64-bit/x64)
  • Screen. 7-inches or bigger (Pro) or 8-inches or bigger (consumer), 800 x 600 resolution and higher
  • Graphics. DirectX 9
  • Hardware buttons (tablet only). Power, Volume Up and Volume Down are required. Start and rotation lock are optional.
  • Audio. Optional.
  • Wireless. Optional.
  • Cellular radio. Optional, can be data-only (not data and voice)
  • Sensors. Optional.
  • Notification (vibration). Optional.
  • Touch. Optional, must be at least two-finger touch.

There are a few other component requirements for optional connectivity, including everything from cellular and WiFi to headset jacks, power and volume buttons, so on and so forth.

Windows 10 tablets will require both volume and power buttons, with Start buttons and rotation lock controls listed as optional.

No major surprises here, in case you’re wondering.

Microsoft’s new operating system is on track to debut in the second half of 2015, with the company officially confirming a summer release date at the abovementioned event in China.
